TEAM AND UMPIRE LODGING

All World Series athletes, coaches and managers will be residents of Southern Wesleyan University's Stuart-Bennett Hall. Each team, its coaches and managers will, when possible, be assigned rooms on the same floor; some teams will need to be split due to the room configuration. Each room is double-occupancy. All rooms in Stuart-Bennett are air-conditioned and are provided with local in-room telephone service. A television lounge is located on each floor.

An Information Desk will be staffed during peak hours each day. Any request, need or concern may be brought to the attention of the staff at the desk on the main floor lobby. The specially-designated World Series telephone number is 864-644-6000.

Umpires and umpire families and several volunteers will enjoy the amenities in the apartment buildings (see village map). Each apartment has four private sleeping rooms with a lavatory, two bathrooms, a living room, laundry facilities and kitchen. Telephone, computer and television portals are provided. Whether in Stuart-Bennett or the apartments, each resident will be provided bed linens, a pillow and towels and wash clothes. There will be a time each morning for linen exchange in the Stuart-Bennett lobby. You are responsible to make exchanges when they are needed. New linens will not be issued, only exchanged. Please bring your personal soap and shaving utensils.

CHECK-OUT DEADLINE FOR ALL FACILITIES IS 9:00 AM ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 6, 2006.

GUEST ACCOMMODATIONS back to top

Parents and friends of the Big League World Series Teams are invited to come to the upstate of South Carolina and enjoy the week-long events.  Most games are played during the evening, which gives you ample time to shop, visit local sites or just rest.  Most of the time, the coach has plans for the team, so don’t plan to spend much time with them during the day.

The closest hotel accommodations to the playing field are available in Easley, and the host hotel is the Comfort Inn.  Here is the contact information:

UNIFORMS back to top

Each team will be issued uniforms for each of the players and coaches.  Once the team has arrived and checked in at the Information Desk, they will be instructed to go to Folger Auditorium to receive their uniform and have a team picture taken.  This is usually completed on Friday early afternoon.  Teams should plan to wear their uniforms to the opening celebration and parade on Friday evening.

Uniform laundry will be provided for those teams who played that day.  Each evening, the soiled uniforms need to be in the lobby by 11:30 pm, unless there is a rain delay, then 1 ¼ hours after the end of the game.  Uniforms should be in the official team laundry bag.  If the uniforms are not delivered to the lobby in time for the laundry, it will be the responsibility of the team to see that they are cleaned.  The team is responsible to retrieve the cleaned uniform the following morning after they have been laundered.

It will be the responsibility of each individual umpire to deliver his uniform to the lobby of Stuart-Bennett Hall to be laundered, and also it will be his responsibility to retrieve it from the lobby of Stuart-Bennett the following morning after it has been laundered.  Umpire uniforms will not be picked up by the SWU staff.

The cleaners will only clean official uniforms.
Any personal clothing will be sent back.
All belts must be removed or pants will not be laundered.
Please double check your laundry bag before it is taken to the dry cleansers.

All uniforms MUST be returned before the team checks out and receives the security deposit refund before they leave the Village.

VILLAGE SECURITY back to top

The World Series Executive Committee and the Southern Wesleyan University Series Task Force expect Village Residents to abide by all posted rules and regulations and otherwise protect the rights and property of all. A damage deposit of $500 is required of each team, payable to Big League World Series, all of which is refundable IF there is no damage assessed at the time of check-out.

The World Series Village is located on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University in Central, South Carolina. Central’s Chief of Police, Joe Gibbs, heads a Task Force of law-enforcement officers who are responsible for Village security. A uniformed policeman and a volunteer constable will be on duty 24-hours a day in the residence hall lobby.

Residents may report a concern and/or incident to the staff member at the Information Desk, or directly to the uniformed officer stationed in the lobby area of Stuart-Bennett Hall.  The direct security phone number is 864-644-6002.

The residence hall end doors will be locked at midnight. The front door will remain open and guarded by the security personnel on duty in the lobby. Village residents are expected to be in the residence hall or the gymnasium after dark, and not running around the campus.

ID PASSES

  • In order to secure the Village, the buses and the games, each official resident of the Village MUST have their lanyard and ID Pass on them at all times.  Village Security, bus drivers and security personnel at the games will have NO LENIENCY when it comes to ID Passes.  Bus drivers have been instructed to transport no one without a proper ID Pass.

RESIDENCE HALL SECURITY

  • All persons entering the residence hall must have their ID Pass and Lanyard.  These are issued with the room key at the time of check-in at the Information Desk.
  • The main lobby door will always be unlocked, with someone at the Information at peak hours, and watched by the security staff.
  • The doors at the end of the building will always be locked.
  • The elevator will not go to the basement of the building.  There is a maximum of 6 persons who can ride the elevator at one time.  If there is abuse to the elevator, and the elevator breaks, the team will be charged the repair fee.
  • There will be NO alcohol, drugs or tobacco use of any kind in the residence hall or anywhere else in the Village.  This is for the teams, coaches, umpires and guests.
  • Any destruction of property will be evaluated and either taken from the team deposit before the team departs on Sunday, or can be paid directly to Southern Wesleyan University by the individual.
  • Please return your key to the Information Desk before you leave.
  • Any loss of linen will be deducted from the room deposit.

RECREATION back to top

Tysinger Gymnasium will be available during the day hours when the SWU athletic teams do not have it scheduled, and each evening from 8:00 pm - 2:00 am.  This includes the weight room, recreation center and an open gymnasium.  Ping Pong balls are available for purchase in the recreation center.  Basketballs may be borrowed from the Information Desk, and returned when the individual is finished playing with them.  There are four tennis courts available to team members.

The Central/Clemson Recreation Center, located about 10 minutes from the Village, has an indoor swimming pool that is available FREE to World Series team members who show their ID badge when they enter the facility.  For those who do not have transportation, the Clemson Area Transit (CAT) bus has a regular schedule from the Village to the Recreation Center, and back.  A bus schedule is available at the Information Desk.  The phone number for the Recreation Center is 864-639-1111.

For those who want to walk or run each day, the Village has side streets with ample space for runners.  It is best for the individual's security to run with a friend and not alone, during the day and not late at night.

For those teams arriving at the Village early (before Friday afternoon), every effort will be made to provide accommodations and meals once the team has arrived.  The coach should plan a schedule for practice, rest, shopping or other recreation for the team until the official activities begin.  The University does not plan activities for the teams who arrive early.

COUNSELING SERVICES

In the event that there is a crisis with your players and/or families, we have arranged for professional counselors to assist them. The Information Desk has the phone number for an immediate crisis or for making an appointment at any time.

Chaplain Ken Dill will be available throughout the series should village residents and their families need the services of counseling.

After  6:00 pm, one of the staff members in the Counseling Center will be available if needed either by phone or in person. The staff member at the Information Desk will have the number available.

VILLAGE RULES AND REGULATIONS back to top

Southern Wesleyan University is honored to welcome such accomplished coaches, athletes and distinguished volunteers from around the world. University and community volunteers will do everything in their power to render your stay in the Upstate of South Carolina comfortable and enjoyable. However, we expect our guests to reciprocate by honoring the following World Series Village regulations:

  1. Southern Wesleyan University is an alcohol, drug and tobacco free environment. Your adherence to this absolute prohibition is expected. Reported violations will be dealt with swiftly by the World Series Executive Committee with those found guilty being expelled from the Village. This is intended for all players, coaches, managers, umpires and guests.

  2. Damage to private and/or University property will not be tolerated. The team whose member(s) are thought to be responsible for such, automatically forfeits the refunding of the $500 security deposit. Violations should be brought to the attention of World Series or University officials. This refers to all furniture in the rooms, windows and screens, computers, and equipment around campus.

  3. It is required that coaches and managers reside in Stuart-Bennett Hall with their respective team. And whereas the University will have security officers on duty 24-hours a day, the coaches and managers are responsible for the health, safety, welfare and behavior of their athletes. A team’s coaches and manager will be held directly and totally responsible for the actions of their team during their stay in the University Village.

  4. "Water-fighting” or practical jokes using water or any other liquid substance in University buildings or outdoors is prohibited.

  5. The World Series Executive Committee and University officials expect umpires and their families, as well as other adult guests residing in the apartments, to honor the fact that the University is an alcohol, tobacco and drug-free environment. Violators will be asked to move off-campus.

  6. Whereas local telephone service is free, World Series Village residents are not to assess long-distance charges to the University. Any such charges are the responsibility of the team and will be billed as such with a charge of $5 per minute.

  7. Respect for Clemson Area Transit (CAT) buses, borrowed vans and other vehicles that may be used by World Series participants is expected. The cost of proven damage will be assessed against the responsible team’s deposit. Only authorized team representatives are permitted to drive the vans.

  8. Only approved World Series personnel are extended meal privileges in the Dining Commons. All others must purchase a meal ticket before eating. Village Residents are required to show their Identification Badge in order to receive their meal.

  9. Professional and or/college scouts are not permitted to speak with Village athletes without permission of the Big League World Series Executive Committee. Those with permission may use University meeting space to meet with an athlete and his coach or manager. The assistant at the Information Desk can make the arrangements.

  10. Monitored surveillance cameras will insure the security of those in Stuart-Bennett Hall. No one without proper identification is permitted access at any time other than in the lobby. Guest females are not permitted in the elevator or on any of the floors outside of the lobby.

  11. A meeting will be held each morning for all coaches, managers and university and World Series personnel. The time and place for the meeting will be announced. It is expected that each team will be represented to discuss mutual topics of concern for each day.
