For the first time since leaving Fort Lauderdale in 1998, the Big League World Series will include a Broward County All-Star team.
Host South Broward (District 21) defeated Florida champion Dunedin 6-3 in the Southeast United States Regional championship at Floyd Hull Stadium Monday night.
South Broward (4-0) advances to Little League Baseball's international showcase for 17- to 19-year-olds in Easley, S.C., starting Saturday. The U.S. Southeast representatives will open against U.S. East at 2:45 p.m. Sunday.
Chad Rose pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts, and Alex Benson hit two doubles as South Broward scored all its runs over the first three innings against Dunedin.
"I just wanted to throw strikes and rely on the guys behind me to make the plays and take us to the Series," said Rose, who surrendered a leadoff home run and a third-inning double.
Mike Liddell capped a three-run second for South Broward with a two-out, two-run single. Jon Hodgman, Corey Hayes and Bobby Corriveau had two hits. |
